MRS is gearing up to initiate construction next year for the extension of its railway tracks directly into the Port of Rio, situated near the historic warehouses in the Santo Cristo neighborhood. PortosRio, the state-owned port management company, reveals that the expanded rail network will have the capacity to transport various goods, including containers, steel products, pig iron, and zinc concentrate, but not iron ore.

The announcement of this railway extension was made by MRS last year, outlining a planned investment of R$150 million in the project, with anticipated completion by 2027. Currently, MRS trains reach the vicinity of the port, and their cargo is then transferred to trucks for subsequent delivery to ships. With the introduction of the railway line, this operation is poised to become more efficient, as a single train can carry the equivalent cargo of 140 trucks.

PortosRio clarifies that the exportation of iron ore will remain exclusively handled by the Port of Itaguaí, situated in the Sepetiba Bay. Complaints about air and sea pollution during ore loading operations on ships are commonplace at this port, which is also managed by PortosRio.

The expansion efforts of MRS’s railway line at the Port of Rio are part of the company’s commitment to a 30-year extension of its concession, beginning upon the expiration of the current contract in 2026. This plan gained approval from the National Land Transportation Agency (ANTT) last year, with MRS’s concession falling under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government.

In an official statement, PortosRio emphasizes that the project’s objective is to “enhance railway infrastructure access to the Port of Rio de Janeiro, making it more efficient and competitive, thereby reducing logistics costs in the foreign trade chain. In this way, the port also improves its internal logistics and stimulates cargo movement through this mode.”

Rosa Cassar, General Manager of Institutional Relations at MRS, mentioned last year that the company was in the detailed project phase. However, she confirmed the preservation of heritage-listed warehouses within the port area.
