Canada Opens Doors for Brazilian Beef from FMD-Free Regions

After a thorough analysis conducted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the Brazilian government has received authorization to expand its beef exports to Canada. The country recently allowed importing meat from regions recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health as free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) without the need for vaccination. Bilateral discussions started progressing after the annual meeting of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in Rome in November 2023.
This new development allows states such as Acre, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and Rondônia, as well as 14 municipalities in Amazonas and five in Mato Grosso, to export dry-aged, deboned beef without lymph nodes to Canada. Santa Catarina, which already had an export permit, remains an eligible region, as do states that continue vaccinating against foot-and-mouth disease. From now on, it will be necessary to update export certificates to ensure compliance with the established requirements.

“The CFIA’s decision represents a significant milestone for the Brazilian agricultural sector and reinforces the ongoing commitment of our livestock farmers to sanitary standards. The known quality of Brazilian beef, coupled with compliance with international animal health requirements, further strengthens Brazil’s position as a prominent player in the global beef export market,” emphasized Roberto Perosa, Secretary of Trade and International Relations at Mapa.
Brazil exported more than $10.541 billion in beef in 2023, which equates to 2.28 million tonnes. Canada imported $39 million of Brazilian beef (8,192,380 kg) in 2023, an 84% increase over 2022.
