Rumo’s Central Rail Line To Commence Regular Operations in Brazil

The Railway Transportation Superintendence of the National Land Transportation Agency (ANTT) announced that it authorized, on Feb 9th, the start of regular commercial operations on the Rumo Central Line (RMC). This train track will cover 282 kilometers between the Ouro Verde (POS) and Santa Helena (PSG) yards, located in the municipalities of Ouro Verde and Santa Helena, in the state of Goiás.

Inaugurated in 2023, the section operated on a commissioning basis up until now. It was subject to tests and operational restrictions to evaluate the performance of the railway. After a positive assessment, ANTT’s railway supervision authorized the transition to regular commercial operation. The authorization represents an important step in the evolution of national logistics integration, connecting ports in the North and Southeast regions and passing through the Brazilian Midwest.

The trains that will be used for freight transportation will follow a specific pattern: they will consist of two C30 locomotives and 16 wagons, with a gross weight of 1,200 gross tons (GT) and a net weight of 500 useful tons (UT), with a maximum length of 400 meters.

Initially, goods such as frozen beef, corn, sugar, automotive parts, ore, and cotton will be transported. This cargo diversity demonstrates the versatility and importance of the new railway route for the country’s economy.

“The authorization to begin operations on the Rumo Central Line represents a significant milestone in the development of Brazil’s logistics infrastructure, promoting greater efficiency and competitiveness in freight transportation. Furthermore, it strengthens the country’s position as an important logistics hub in South America,” explains ANTT’s Director-General, Rafael Vitale.

With the new route in operation, it will be possible to promote a smoother flow in the transportation of goods and merchandise aligned with sustainable development, with environmental benefits, as the railway mode has lower pollutant emissions compared to other means of transportation.

“The Rumo Central Line is celebrated as a significant step in enhancing Brazil’s transportation infrastructure, driving economic development and connectivity between the country’s regions,” concluded Ismael Trinks, Superintendent of Railway Transportation at ANTT.
