In February, Wilson Sons welcomed the first natural gas-powered vessel from the company CMA CGM to operate in Brazil at Tecon Rio Grande (RS). After stopping in Rio Grande, it continued its journey to Singapore.
The vessel, named CMA CGM BAHIA, was built in 2023 and has a capacity of 13,000 TEUs. With a length of 336 meters and a width of 51 meters, it chose Tecon Rio Grande as a port of call for its journey. CMA CGM has publicly announced its goal to become Net Zero Carbon by the year 2050. By 2028, they plan to operate 120 low-carbon ships, reducing emissions in their operations. The use of natural gas instead of fuel oil results in lower emissions of greenhouse gases, sulfur, particulate matter, and other pollutants, offering an alternative to facilitate the energy transition towards a low-carbon economy.
“We need to always be ready to aid customers from all over the world,” says Paulo Bertinetti, CEO of Tecon Rio Grande. “Our terminal is highly capable of receiving vessels of all types, including those powered by natural gas. We understand that this is an increasingly significant trend and, in this case, it aligns our purpose with that of CMA CGM for an operation focused on minimizing impacts on nature, which we are very proud of,” he adds.
Neusa Marcelino, General Manager of CMA CGM Brazil, highlights that the arrival of CMA CGM BAHIA marks the beginning of a new era in the Brazilian naval industry. “This is a transformative milestone that demonstrates our Group’s unwavering commitment to promoting the country’s sustainable economic goals. By deploying these state-of-the-art ships specifically designed for Latin American waters, we are actively supporting our clients’ sustainable business and initiatives,” she argues.
“With these modern vessels, we will be able to handle more volumes while significantly reducing the environmental impact of shipments. This not only aligns with our clients’ sustainability goals but also contributes significantly to promoting a cleaner and more sustainable future for all,” Neusa concludes.
