Bahia state fruit exports increased to $253.6 million (R$1.3 billion) in 2023, a significant milestone for the state’s agriculture. Mangoes led the charge, accounting for a staggering $155.5 million, or 61% of total sales. Grapes came in second, at $54.2 million (23.4%), followed by lemons and limes at $36.5 million (14.4%) and papayas at $5.8 million (2.3%).
The favorable climate for tropical fruit production, especially mangoes and grapes, played a pivotal role in this achievement, according to state officials. They also highlighted fruit cultivation in the Chapada Diamantina region, which, due to its higher altitude than other parts of Bahia, has become a hotspot for growers interested in temperate climate fruits such as plums, strawberries, persimmons, and grapes for fine wine production.
The following chart shows a month-on-month breakdown of Brazilian fruit exports (hs code 08) between January 2022 and December 2023. The data is from Datamar’s maritime intelligence service DataLiner.

The European Union emerged as the top importer of Bahia’s fruits, accounting for $151.7 million (59.81%) of total exports, followed by the United States at $64 million (23%), and the United Kingdom at $24.2 million (9.56%). This surge in fruit exports signals promising prospects for Bahia’s fruit industry and underscores its growing significance in international markets.
