Minister Pledges Billions in Investments for Port of Santos at Intermodal 2024

During his opening speech at Intermodal, Latin America’s largest logistics trade show, Minister of Ports and Airports Silvio Costa Filho promised substantial investments in the Port of Santos, aligning its infrastructure to the standing of Brazil’s recent economic growth and job recovery indicators.

“I will soon announce detailed information on investments totaling approximately R$10 billion in the largest port in the southern hemisphere,” emphasized the minister to the audience, which included Minister of Transportation Renan Filho, São Paulo Governor Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, and Eduardo Nery, President of the National Agency for Waterborne Transportation (Antaq), along with numerous dignitaries and leaders from the global logistics industry.

Silvio Costa announced, “There will also be significant investments, both public and private, across all Brazilian ports, amounting to a total of R$80 billion. In the aviation sector, investments are projected to reach R$15 billion, and in waterways, the total is estimated at R$4 billion.”

Costa Filho recapped several economic achievements of Brazil, including the reduction in interest rates, GDP growth, ascending to ninth place in the global economy ranking, ranking as the second top country worldwide in attracting foreign investments, tax reform, and notably, the creation of 1.5 million formal jobs. He also expressed excitement for the upcoming announcement, scheduled for the 18th, where investments of R$2 billion in Congonhas Airport will be unveiled alongside Governor Tarcísio de Freitas.

Transportation Minister Renan Filho echoed Costa Filho’s optimism, revealing plans for new auctions and concession contracts to boost the national economy.

Accompanied by Anderson Pomini, President of the Santos Port Authority (APS), Minister Costa toured the exhibition booths, which gathered 500 companies from 15 countries. “The minister’s announcements underscore the magnitude of our mission at the Port of Santos, which accounts for 30% of Brazil’s trade flow,” expressed Pomini, extending gratitude to the minister.

Pomini also signed cooperation agreements with Portuguese ports in Lisbon, Setúbal, and Sessimbra SA. Additionally, a technical partnership with Infra SA was celebrated during the same afternoon. Pomini also saw delegations from the Netherlands and other countries visit APS’ booth at the event.
