Long-awaited Improvement Project Set to Transform Port of São Francisco do Sul
Mar, 11, 2024 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202410
A long-standing demand to remove a submerged rock at the Port of São Francisco do Sul is finally being addressed, with plans to increase the draft at the site. Currently, a bidding process is underway for removing the rock formation, with a maximum contract value of R$12 million. Clearing the obstruction will enhance the efficiency and safety of docking operations, increasing the draft at the extraction point. Upon signing, the contract will be valid for 12 months.
The rock is located between berths 101 and 102, at a depth of 10.5 meters. The removal aims to deepen the area’s depth to 14 meters, matching the port’s draft. Since explosives are prohibited in the docking berths, drilling rigs will be used to penetrate the rocky mass, as described in the tender document. Hydraulic breakers may be employed to split the rock into fragments, which will then be mined by long-reach excavators. Other methods may also be considered.
The best way to move forward with deepening the external access channel to the Port of São Francisco do Sul, a historical demand for the terminal, is currently being analyzed. One possibility is to grant a concession to the private sector. The issue has been debated for at least a decade.
