Lisbon and Setúbal ports have signed a mutual aid protocol with the port of Santos, Brazil, aiming to promote port innovation and technical and scientific exchange, particularly in areas like decarbonization and digitalization. The agreement, valid for two years, was sealed at the 2024 Intermodal South America event in São Paulo, Brazil.
According to Carlos Correia, Chairman of the APL Board of Directors, “This partnership strengthens our connection with the Brazilian market and underscores our joint commitment to port sector innovation. We aim to leverage the strengths of each port and align synergies for the exchange of best practices, making us more dynamic and strategic, with a special focus on innovation, digitalization, and blue cluster development.”
The port of Lisbon is Portugal’s leader in agribusiness, with Brazil being one of the key origin markets for agriculture goods shipped in bulk to Lisbon Port, which handled 4.79 million tonnes of solid bulk goods in 2023, of which 3.8 million tonnes corresponded to food items (79%).
In this line, the Brazilian market accounted for 1.082 million tonnes, equivalent to 28% of food in bulk and 23% of the total solid bulk handled in 2023.
The Intermodal South America is one of the world’s largest trade fairs dedicated to the logistics, ports, and foreign trade sectors, held from March 5th to 7th in São Paulo, Brazil.
