The Official Gazette of the Union, in its edition of March 13, 2024, published the decision of the Board of the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ), approving the “opening of public hearing and consultation to obtain further contributions, subsidies, and suggestions for the improvement of technical and legal documents related to the bidding process for the leasing of the port area known as MUC04, dedicated to the handling and storage of containerized cargo, located at the Organized Port of Fortaleza”.
The Importance of Leasing the Container Terminal for the Port of Fortaleza
The success of the port leasing bidding process, the so-called MUC 04, is crucial for the growth of the Port of Fortaleza.
In 2023, with the commencement of the temporary lease contract for an area of 8.9 hectares, intended for the composition of a container and general cargo terminal, the Port Authority of Ceará, the administrator of the Port of Fortaleza, reported a 63.1% increase in container handling compared to 2022.
The current operator of the container terminal, one of the world’s top three leaders in maritime transport and logistics, even under a temporary contract, invested approximately R$ 80 million in infrastructure in 2023.
“The prospects for the definitive lease of our Container Terminal leave us quite optimistic. We estimate that R$ 400 million will be invested in the Terminal by the end of the contract with the winning company of the bidding process, which has a minimum term of 25 years. To achieve this, the leased area will increase from the current 8.9 hectares to 13.4 hectares – representing a significant increase of 50%,” said Lucio Gomes, CEO of the Port Authority of Ceará.
Service: The public hearing and consultation process will take place over 60 (sixty) days, starting on March 21, 2024.
