DP World commits USD 50 million to expand container operations at Port of Santos

Port terminal operator DP World announced a new investment worth USD 50 million (approximately BRL 250 million) for purchasing new equipment for its terminal located on the left bank of the Port of Santos.
This investment marks the latest phase of the terminal’s expansion works, totaling USD 85 million (R$ 425 million), including the extension of the quay by 190 meters, announced in 2023 and budgeted at USD 35 million (R$ 175 million). Expected to be completed by the end of 2024, DP World’s terminal will support the berthing of two large vessels (Q-max scale, over 345 meters) simultaneously, creating significant opportunities to enhance operational efficiency for shipowners. The new equipment will also support the terminal’s capacity expansion strategy, elevating it by an additional 1.7 million TEUs, and strengthening Brazil’s economic growth.
In total, 21 new pieces of equipment will be acquired, including two quay cranes, five RTGs (Rubber-Tired Gantry Crane), 12 ITVs (Internal Transfer Vehicle), and two ECHs (Empty Container Handler).
“The expansions being carried out by DP World in Brazil aim to meet the growing demand in the container market in the post-pandemic era, as well as to prepare the terminal to support Santos’ growth and strategic role as a Hub Port for South America,” explains Fabio Siccherino, CEO of DP World in Brazil. “We constantly evaluate new investments to ensure that the capacity of the Port of Santos stays ahead of demand, with a high level of service,” he adds.
In line with the global strategy to neutralize carbon emissions by 2040, the new equipment has already been acquired with technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions of polluting gases.

It’s important to highlight that the company had already taken a pioneering step in the sector by electrifying the RTGs at the Port of Santos in 2023. This initiative involved adapting 22 machines, reducing the terminal’s diesel consumption by 60%.
