Argentine beef exports grow 10% in the 4th quarter of 2023

In the fourth quarter of 2023, Argentine beef exports reached 167,000 tonnes, representing a 10% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

Throughout the year, total exports amounted to 669,000 tonnes, a 9% increase compared to the previous year. In terms of revenue, exports totaled US$624 million in the last quarter of 2023, surpassing US$2.7 billion for the entire year. These figures are from the Sector Overview report released by Minerva Foods.

Key Destinations and Markets

China remained the main destination for Argentine exports in the fourth quarter of 2023, accounting for 63% of the total, followed by Germany and Chile, with market shares of 9% and 6%, respectively. Throughout 2023, China also led the exports, with 60% of the total, followed by Germany, with 9%, and Israel, with 8%.

Slaughter and Prices

Cattle slaughter in Argentina in the fourth quarter of 2023 totaled 3.5 million heads, with an average price of 1,965.4 Argentine pesos per kilogram. In the cumulative total for the year, slaughter reached 14.513 million heads, a 7% increase compared to 2022, with an average price of 1,160.5 pesos per kilogram. Despite economic challenges, the average price of cattle in dollars remained stable at US$3.9 per kilogram throughout 2023, but in the fourth quarter reached US$4.6 per kilogram.

Domestic Challenges

The Argentine domestic market continues to be affected by inflation, impacting the population’s purchasing power and restricting beef consumption in the country.
