DataLiner Data Confirms Brazilian Container Exports Surged Nearly 29% in First Two Months of 2024

The Brazilian container trade has kicked off 2024 on a strong note. Recent data from Datamar regarding exports and imports of containers from the East Coast of South America shows a notable increase in Brazilian shipments abroad, up by 28.7% in the first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2023. Concurrently, imports also experienced growth, rising by 20.3% in the same comparison.

During January and February, Brazil exported 490,168 TEUs, marking an increase of 109,208 TEUs compared to the same months in 2023.

China remains Brazil’s primary trading partner in container exports, with a 52.5% surge compared to the first two months of 2023, as indicated by Datamar’s business intelligence tool. Shipments to the United States grew by 19.6%, and to Mexico by 44.7% during the same period.

The export landscape in Brazil for the first two months of 2024 highlights meat as the leading category, showing a 6.0% increase in volume compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, wood shipments saw a significant growth of 37.3%, while cotton surged by 271.9% in the same comparison.

Imports

Brazilian container imports totaled 491,365 TEUs in the first two months of the year, reflecting a 20.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

DataLiner data shows that container imports from China spiked by 48.1%, while those from the United States increased by 22.6% in the same comparison.

Plastics emerged as the most imported category in the initial months of 2024, witnessing a 35% surge compared to 2023. Furthermore, reactors, boilers, and machinery experienced a growth of 23.9%, with glass imports soaring by 317.2% in the same comparison.

Plate countries

While Argentina’s container exports remained relatively stable in the first two months of 2024, experiencing a marginal decrease of -0.1% compared to the same period in 2023, imports saw a significant decline of -14.9% during the same period.

Uruguay, on the other hand, saw a notable increase in container exports, up by 6.2% in the January and February 2024 period compared to the same months in 2023. Similarly, imports also saw a corresponding increase of 6.2% in the same comparison.
