For the first time, Porto Itapoá receives a 51-meter wide ship

Porto Itapoá welcomed the widest vessel to dock at the terminal since the beginning of its operations in 2011. The maneuver of the ship with a 51-meter “beam width” last week will be used as an experimental basis for the approval of the parameter for navigation in Babitonga Bay. If homologation is granted upon analysis, Babitonga’s external channel, used for access to Itapoá and São Francisco do Sul, will be authorized to receive larger cargo ships.

The CMA CGM Búzios, measuring 336 meters in length, was the widest vessel to dock at the port. “The success of the operation demonstrates the capacity of our bay to receive large vessels safely and efficiently,” said Sergni Pessoa Rosa Jr., Porto Itapoá’s Director of Operations, Technology, and Environment.

In another initiative, the State government intends to deepen the external channel from 14 to 16 meters, allowing the passage of larger vessels. The port of São Francisco do Sul is seeking funding for R$ 300 million in refurbishment works. Part of the sediment removed during dredging will be used to expand the Itapoá beach.
