In a significant move for Ceará’s clean energy aspirations, Governor Elmano de Freitas participated in the signing of the sixth pre-contract for green hydrogen and ammonia production in the state. The pact, inked between the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP) and French renewable energy leader Voltalia, marks another step towards Ceará’s Green Hydrogen Hub project.
The project, envisioned for the Pecém Complex, boasts a projected investment of $3 billion and promises to generate 5,000 jobs during the implementation phase. Governor Freitas emphasized the importance of attracting green hydrogen producers to Ceará.
“We’ve been actively facilitating infrastructure and logistics to make the Port of Pecém attractive to these companies,” he said. “Each pre-contract signed signifies progress on our project to solidify Ceará’s position in the renewable energy sector.”
Echoing the Governor’s sentiment, Hugo Figueirêdo, president of the Pecém Complex, expressed optimism. “We’re thrilled to announce another pre-contract for our green hydrogen hub. Each one reinforces the project’s strength and potential. We’ll continue working to secure more pre-contracts throughout 2024.”
For Hélio Winston Leitão, president of ZPE Ceará (Special Economic Zone), the pre-contract signifies a crucial step towards establishing the Green Hydrogen Hub. “The main challenge is implementing these large-scale investments and positioning Ceará as a leader in the green economy market,” he explained. “With the pre-contract, Voltalia secures a designated area and can proceed with licensing for project execution.”
French Expertise Joins the Mix
Voltalia do Brasil, established in the country in 2006, brings extensive experience to the table. As a subsidiary of the French group Voltalia, with operations in 20 countries, they specialize in renewable energy projects. Currently, Voltalia do Brasil operates over 1,500 MW of wind and solar farms, primarily concentrated in the Northeast region.
Ceará’s Green Hydrogen Hub project is gaining significant traction, attracting major players and promising substantial job creation and economic growth. With each pre-contract signed, the state inches closer to becoming a green hydrogen powerhouse in Brazil.
