Portos RS, the administrator of the ports of Porto Alegre, Pelotas, and Rio Grande, is redefining the boundaries of innovation in port logistics in Latin America. Among the innovations are the implementation of international technologies to improve port management, the monitoring of waters and maritime traffic, and partnerships with universities and startups.
Strategic technologies – such as the Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system, monitoring of sea depths in collaboration with the Israeli startup DockTech, and the PortRisk risk management platform from RightShip – are pillars of this advancement. “Our strategic planning is based on continuous investments in technology, essential to improve the competitiveness and effectiveness of our operations,” said Portos RS President Cristiano Klinger.
Developed in partnership with the Marítimo RS Local Productive Arrangement Association (APL), through the company Technomar, VTS allows real-time monitoring of ships in the Rio Grande Port Complex, significantly improving the management and safety of maritime traffic. VTS not only optimizes port operations but also provides access to information via the Portos RS website, increasing transparency and democratizing access to the port community. The system began operation in March of this year.
Another important partnership is with RightShip to implement PortRisk, a digital platform focusing on environment, social, and governance (ESG), globally recognized for its leadership in maritime solutions. PortRisk is a comprehensive risk management solution that facilitates active and proactive risk management for ships accessing the port zone.
“With an extensive and continuously updated database that includes information on maritime vessels, incidents, and complete ship histories, the system allows for better risk assessment and management. This increases the operational efficiency of the port and enhances the safety of all port operations,” added Cristiano.
In addition to being a key partner in technological deliveries, Portos RS also plays a significant role in the regional innovation ecosystem, maintaining strategic collaborations with academic institutions and innovation centers. Through partnerships with the Federal University of Rio Grande (Furg), the Ocean Tech Technological Park, and the Pelotas Technological Park, Portos RS is actively involved in the Great Pact for Innovation, led by the municipality of Rio Grande.
These connections drive research and development of new technological solutions but also strengthen Portos RS as a catalyst for innovation, supporting sustainable development and fostering local startups.
“When we refer to our aspiration to be a reference in managing the port complex and to establish ourselves as a hub in the Southern Cone, we realize how vital our role is in connecting people as a port authority. By facilitating interaction among various stakeholders, such as cargo operators and terminals, and all stakeholders involved in our process, it is essential that we rely on robust technological innovations to navigate this path with precision and effectiveness,” concluded the president of Portos RS.
