The efforts initiated by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, during his mission to India in November last year, continue to yield positive outcomes for Brazil. Following discussions with Shri Parshottam Rupala, Minister of Fisheries, Livestock, and Dairy of India, and Kamala V Rao, CEO of the Food Safety Authority of India, Brazil received confirmation on Friday (19) of the opening of two new markets: farmed fish (aquaculture) and captured fish (extractive fishing).
This recent development complements Brazil’s recent expansions in its agricultural agenda with the Asian nation. Over the past 12 months, the Indian government has granted authorization for the import of Brazilian açaí powder and açaí juice.
In 2023, India ranked as the 12th main destination for Brazilian agricultural exports, totaling sales of US$2.9 billion. Notably, sugar and soybean oil were among the most traded commodities.
According to Agrostat (Brazilian Agribusiness Foreign Trade Statistics), Brazil exported over 12 thousand tons of fish to approximately 90 countries in the first three months of this year, generating revenues of US$193 million. This represents a significant increase of more than 160% compared to the same period last year when sales amounted to US$74 million.
Roberto Perosa, Secretary of Commerce and International Relations at Mapa, underscored the country’s ongoing commitment to expanding the presence of Brazilian agricultural products in global markets. He emphasized that such a strategy not only enhances international opportunities for Brazilian products and underscores confidence in the country’s health control system but also bolsters the domestic economy. The recent commercial openings are poised to create more job opportunities and increase the income of Brazilian producers.
With the addition of these new markets, Brazilian agribusiness has achieved its 30th international trade opening this year alone. Over the last 16 months, a total of 108 new markets have been established across 50 countries.
