A technical assessment team from the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), represented by the Directorate of Waterborne Infrastructure (DAQ), conducted a site visit to oversee the ongoing expansion works at the Nova Avanhandava canal on the Tietê-Paraná waterway last Friday, March 17th.
This project, a result of a collaboration between DNIT and the Government of São Paulo, entails deepening the canal by 3.5 meters across a 16-kilometer stretch, involving the removal of 552 thousand cubic meters of rocky material. With an investment totaling R$293.8 million, this initiative aims to enhance regional logistics by ensuring navigability even during dry periods.
The expansion of the Nova Avanhandava Canal holds strategic importance for the region. By augmenting the cargo handling capacity along the Tietê-Paraná waterway, these efforts substantially contribute to logistical efficiency, thereby reducing transportation costs and fostering economic growth in the serviced areas. Moreover, enhancing the navigability of the canal directly benefits key sectors such as agriculture by facilitating the smooth flow of products and inputs, thereby bolstering the competitiveness of regional production chains.
The completion of this project, slated for the second half of 2026, marks a pivotal milestone for the region’s waterway infrastructure and the logistics sector at large.
