Chinese presence in Suape boosts port’s regional relevance

Chinese companies have taken center stage at the Port of Suape in recent days, orchestrating large cargo operations. Among them, Goldwind stands out, being the driving force of an unprecedented delivery of 108 wind turbines. The cargo necessitated a contractual agreement with Tecon Suape for storage and safekeeping.
Tecon Suape secured the contract through a competitive process, winning the right to provide storage services for a 15-month period, although the financial details remain undisclosed. Rodrigo Aguiar, the commercial director of Tecon Suape, revealed that during this timeframe, the components will be housed in a premium yard until they undergo nationalization. Although the contract did not initially cover the turbine blades, they were accommodated upon the initial delivery on an exceptional basis.
The maneuvering efforts required for the operation were substantial, primarily due to the dimensions of the blades, which measure 84 meters in length. However, the layout of the container terminal proved highly conducive, necessitating no modifications to the area. The terminal boasts a direct access point to the port highway, linking seamlessly with BR-101.
Simultaneously, the unloading of the Goldwind cargo, notable for its size as the towers were imported in one piece, occurred alongside another substantial shipment from BYD, a manufacturer set to transport 14,000 vehicles through Suape to the Northeast by June. This surge in activity is in response to the looming increase in import taxes on electric cars, scheduled for July.
The influx of operations has filled Tecon’s docks with wind equipment and vehicles, with similar volumes expected in the coming weeks. BYD’s initial landing, between April 15 and 16, totaled almost two thousand vehicles, a figure expected to replicate in the current week. Subsequently, an even larger shipment exceeding 3,000 cars is anticipated shortly.
These operations underscore Suape’s growing significance as a regional port. Tecon serves as a pivotal entry point not only for cargo destined for Pernambuco but also for neighboring states such as Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, and Alagoas, as well as regions in southern Ceará and northern Bahia.
