Appian Capital Brazil’s Mineral Exports Exceed 72,000 Tons in January-April 2024

Appian Capital Brazil, a private investment fund specializing in mining, is experiencing solid growth and is starting 2024 with exports at full steam. In the first four months, more than 72 thousand tons of copper and sulfide nickel concentrate were sent to Canada, Finland and China. The fund of British origin, with five years of experience in the Brazilian market, is responsible for managing two assets in Brazil: Atlantic Nickel – producer of sulphide nickel concentrate – and Mineração Vale Verde – producer of copper concentrate.
“We are optimistic about the results we will present this year, despite the current challenges in the nickel market. The first four months were marked by growth in the export volume of our operations, around 7% compared to the same period last year. This fact reflects Appian’s ongoing commitment to excellence and efficiency. The assets are operating at maximum production capacity, always safely and integrated with the environment and surrounding communities. We are confident that we will continue to follow this path of success, maintaining our focus on innovation and sustainability”, explains Milson Mundim, CFO of Appian Capital Brazil.
During the period, it is noteworthy that a combined shipment was carried out, maintaining the strategy adopted in 2023 to transport the production of copper and sulphide nickel, reducing carbon emissions and freight costs, which reflects efficiency in the logistics operation of the bottom. With this, it is expected to reach the end of 2024 with satisfactory figures for carbon savings in commodity logistics.
Carbon savings in 2023
With this strategy, Appian was able to reduce emissions of more than 4,680(t) CO2e in 2023. This reduction represented 31.58% of the total emissions that would occur in a scenario of individual shipments. The transport of these commodities represents the movement of base minerals for investment in clean energy, making Appian Capital Brazil a highly relevant protagonist for the energy transition.
In 2023, Appian Capital Brazil exported more than 200 thousand tons of copper and sulfide nickel sent to North America, Europe and Asia. For this year, Appian Capital Brazil’s expectation is to increase exports with the production of assets at their maximum capacity. The investment fund and its assets remain committed to intelligent management, focused on sustainable development combined with a commitment to communities, without losing sight of the purpose of reaching its maximum production potential in a safe manner.
Atlantic Nickel (ATN): Export performance
With a load of 39,347 tons of sulfide nickel concentrate, Atlantic Nickel (ATN), the only producer of sulfide nickel in Brazil, carried out four shipments in the first four months of 2024. The ships went from the Port of Ilhéus (BA) to Canada, China and to Finland. In 2023, the asset exported more than 100 thousand tons of sulfide nickel concentrate, with approximately 14 thousand tons of contained nickel to North America, Europe and Asia.
Since it began operations at Mina Santa Rita in October 2019, Atlantic Nickel has maintained its commitment to sustainable development, without losing sight of the purpose of reaching its maximum production potential. Nickel sulphide is one of the most resistant and versatile metals in nature, as well as being a fundamental raw material in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles.
Mineração Vale Verde (MVV): Export performance
The first shipments of copper concentrate produced at the Serrote mine in 2024 totaled 32,808 tons. The ships left the port of Maceió bound for China. Last year, Mineração Vale Verde sent more than 105 thousand tons, approximately 26 thousand tons of contained copper, to Finland, Taiwan and China.
Mineração Vale Verde is the only enterprise in the state of Alagoas that deals with base metals. In 2022, the mining company completed its ramp-up and the Serrote mine reached its maximum production capacity. Copper is one of the metals expected to be in high demand in the market, due to the energy transition, being present in electric cars, batteries, wind turbines and solar panels, among others.
