According to data released by the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea), Brazil’s cotton exports in April 2024 reached a record high for the period, with 241.48 thousand tonnes exported. During the 2022/2023 harvest season (from August 2023 to April 2024), the total volume shipped was 2.12 million tonnes, marking a 69.07% increase compared to the same period in the 2021/2022 harvest.

This significant growth was primarily driven by increased demand from China and higher production levels during the 2022/2023 season. Mato Grosso, the largest exporting state, accounted for 1.32 million tonnes of cotton, representing 62.19% of the national shipments to date. However, the state’s share of Brazil’s total cotton exports decreased by 3.75 percentage points compared to the same period last harvest, due to increased contributions from other states like São Paulo.

With exports continuing to rise, Imea projects that Mato Grosso will export a total of 1.73 million tons in the entire harvest season (from August 2023 to July 2024), a volume 4.84% higher than that recorded in the 2021/2022 season.
