Port of Itaqui Sets Historic Record with 11 Maneuvers in Two Hours

The Port of Itaqui marked a historic milestone on May 16th by completing 11 maneuvers within a single low tide window, a period of just two hours, setting a new record for the port.
This achievement included five undockings and six dockings, with five maneuvers conducted simultaneously. The success of this operation was made possible by the liberalization of the mooring service market in August 2022. Prior to this, only one company was contracted by the Maranhense Port Administration Company (EMAP), with a contractual limit of five ships per window.
The measure significantly increased the port’s operational capacity, enabling this record-setting performance. The Association of Pilots of the State of Maranhão (APEM) played a pivotal role in planning and coordinating the maneuvers.
The sequence of undocking and docking involved multiple resources, including tugboats, and required a high level of coordination and efficiency. The 11 maneuvers were distributed among three mooring companies: Internacional Marítima, which handled four maneuvers; Smart Sea, which managed five maneuvers; and Venus, which conducted two maneuvers.
These operations took place at berths 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, and 106. Notably, the maneuvers at berth 102 were scheduled to occur 1 hour and 30 minutes after low tide, leveraging an available window in accordance with the Maneuvering Guidelines for tidal ranges less than 4.0 meters.
“The record established at the Port of Itaqui is a testament to the port’s progress and operational capacity, showcasing efficiency and innovation in port management in Brazil. It also highlights the efficiency and safety with which these companies operate,” emphasized Adauto José Aguiar Serpa, Operations Manager at the Port of Itaqui.
