Maersk has launched the “Maersk Spot” digital tool. This is a new product that, according to the Danish shipping company, seeks to simplify the process of purchasing space in containers for its customers. The goal is to “break the overbooking cycle” and simplify procedures for shipping a container with the assurance that it will be charged at a fixed price.
According to Maersk, the manual system normally generates 30% of overbooked reservations, which means running waiting lists, while with the new digital system, requests can be made online with full visibility of the price and available spaces.
With Maersk Spot, customers can search and receive competitive rates online 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The total price is calculated and corrected instantly when the reservation is confirmed.
The final price of a shipment is immediately calculated when the reservation is confirmed, 13 steps ahead of the current procedures. “The Maersk Spot radically simplifies the purchasing experience for our clients. Today’s offline process can have up to 13 steps that often involve a lot of communication and paperwork, from price lists to terms and conditions, surcharges, etc. With Maersk Spot, this tiresome process is reduced to five simple, integrated steps, all on-line”, says Maersk’s Global Head of Oceanic Products, Silvia Ding.
When a reservation is confirmed by the customer, Maersk ensures a safe operational execution. However, in case of the cancellation of a reservation, the fees will be applied to the customer which, in turn, will be compensated if their products are not sent according to the terms set.
The service is available in all markets except the United States. Currently available as a BETA site, the product will be deployed on maersk.com in early August.
