On June 4th, the container terminals at the Port of Rio de Janeiro marked a historic milestone with the simultaneous docking of four container ships, three of which exceed 330 meters in length.
The MSC PARIS, measuring 334 meters in length overall (LOA), and the MSC AKRITAS, at 330 meters LOA, docked at the MultiRio container terminal. Meanwhile, the EVER FULL, with an LOA of 333 meters, and the MERCOSUL SUAPE, at 210 meters LOA, berthed at the Rio Brasil Terminal.
In anticipation of operating with even larger vessels, particularly the New Panamax class ships that span an impressive 366 meters, the Port of Rio de Janeiro is undertaking significant dredging efforts to deepen its main channel.
This project, scheduled for completion in October, represents an investment of R$163 million, fully funded by PortosRio. The dredging initiative is set to greatly enhance the port’s cargo handling capacity, a crucial step to maintaining the competitiveness of its container terminals amidst the growing trend of increasing container ship sizes.
