Swimming against the footwear industry tide, Brazilian exports of hides and skins are rapidly surging. Contrary to decreasing footwear exports, shipments of hides and skins are still well received abroad. In May, the leather sector sold USD 116.7 million (up 28% over the same month last year).
Year-to-date, the sum of exports stands at USD 548.4 million, an increase of 17.7% from the period spanning January to May. When these figures are translated into square meters, the results remain positive: up 43.7% in May and 26.2% year to date.
The following chart shows tanning industry exports, including hides, skins, and processed leather products between January 2021 and April 2024. The data was extracted from Datamar’s maritime intelligence service DataLiner.

These numbers are part of a survey released by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) on the morning of June 12. According to Rogerio Cunha, CICB’s Business Intelligence representative, the sector’s shipments were affected by the heavy rains and river floods that plagued Rio Grande do Sul.
“The state is first in the list of Brazilian exporters. Despite the complications caused by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, its indexes remained relatively stable in May, culminating in positive end result,” Cunha emphasizes.
Rio Grande do Sul held a 26.3% share in Brazil’s exports from January to May 2024. From January to April. the share had been 26.6%.
The top importers of Brazilian leather in monetary terms are China and Hong Kong (32.4% share), the United States (13.8%), Italy (12.0%), Vietnam (9.9%), Mexico (5.8%), and Thailand (3.3%).
According to the CICB, all these countries are being targeted at fairs and trade missions in the coming months. The Brazilian Leather project, a partnership between CICB and ApexBrasil, kicks off its Asia tour in early July with a commercial mission to Thailand and Vietnam, including participation in the Shoes and Leather Vietnam fair.
Following that, Brazilian tanneries will take part in the Lineapelle New York fair. The second half of the year will conclude with appearances at the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai, Lineapelle in Milan, and ANPIC in León, Mexico. This busy schedule aims to sustain the robust pace of the country’s leather exports.
