Operating draft at Ponta do Félix increased to 9.15 meters

Public company Portos do Paraná has increased the maximum operating draft at Porto Ponta do Félix in Antonina, located on the coast of Paraná state. A ship’s draft refers to the distance between the waterline and the deepest point of the vessel (keel). According to Administrative Rule 192/2024, enacted by the Port Authority of Paranaguá and Antonina (APPA), the draft at the Port of Antonina has been increased from 8.3 meters to 9.15 meters.

“This draft increase is the result of a collaborative effort between Portos do Paraná, pilotage services, and the Navy. Following the completion of dredging activities, expanded environmental monitoring, and technical discussions, we were able to achieve this feat. This allows for a significant increase in the movement of sugar in bulk and enables the terminal to operate more efficiently with fertilizer ships, reinforcing our commitment to continually enhance the efficiency of Paraná’s ports,” highlighted Victor Kengo, Director of Engineering and Maintenance at Portos do Paraná.

With the increased draft, more heavily loaded ships will be able to dock at Ponta do Félix Port, enhancing its competitiveness and benefiting the entire logistics chain in Paraná. “This makes the economy more competitive, not just in Antonina and Paraná but across Brazil. By allowing the port to handle a greater volume of cargo, all the import and export chains that rely on us become more competitive,” said Gilberto Birkhan, CEO of Porto Ponta do Félix.

Birkhan emphasized the progress made through teamwork. “This achievement represents a substantial increase in the operating capacity of ships in Antonina, both for inbound and outbound cargo, enhancing our capabilities for import and export,” he concluded.
