Log-In Integrated Logistics develops project to minimize effects of lack of seafarers

The low number of maritime professionals is a challenge that has put the navigation market on alert. According to a study conducted by the Vanzolini Foundation and the Center for Innovation in Logistics and Port Infrastructure at the University of São Paulo (Cilip), 4,000 Merchant Marine officers will need to be trained by 2030.

In Brazil, maritime professionals are certified exclusively by the Navy through three years of study (supplemented by up to two years of onboard practice) at the Merchant Marine Officer Training Schools (EFOMM) in Rio de Janeiro and Belém. These courses are offered annually, but the number of available spots falls far short of the market’s needs.

This shortage of Brazilian mariners, especially Engine and Nautical Officers, has caused significant hiring difficulties for Brazilian Navigation Companies and has become a bottleneck for the growth of coastal shipping, as employing Brazilian crew members on vessels operating in this traffic is mandatory.

To mitigate the impacts revealed by the study commissioned by the Brazilian Association of Coastal Shipping Companies (ABAC) and the National Union of Maritime Navigation Companies (Syndarma), Log-In Logística Integrada has launched the “ReIntegrate at Sea” [ReIntegrar No Mar] program. The program’s primary goal is to allow 1st Officers and Chief Engineers with expired certifications to re-enter the maritime market.

According to Andréa Simões, Director of People, Culture, and Digital Transformation at Log-In, the company’s measure is insufficient to solve the professional deficit problem but contributes to reintegrating mariners into the sector. “The lack of workforce can drastically harm the segment’s development, potentially reducing operations and halting fleet expansion. Thus, it is up to not only large organizations to offer alternatives to address this scenario, as this project does, but primarily the responsible authorities to seek solutions that can truly resolve this problem,” she notes.

ReIntegrar No Mar Program

During the program, participants will be assigned to Log-In ships based on operational needs, gaining comprehensive experience in coastal and long-haul services. Two positions will be available: one for a 1st Officer and one for a Chief Engineer, with salaries corresponding to the categories.

After the internship, Log-In may offer an 18-month employment contract based on the results of evaluations conducted during the program.
