Port of São Sebastião breaks all-time record for cargo throughput

A study by São Sebastião Docks Company (CDSS) revealed that cargo throughput at the Port of São Sebastião hit a new record in the first half of this year. The port saw some 760 thousand tonnes of cargo, representing a 57% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The main cargos transported included bulk sugar (287.5 thousand tons), bulk soda ash (190.3,000 tons), and bulk petroleum coke (107.5 thousand tons).

“The increase in the availability of storage areas attracted more importers and exporters, who began to use the Port of São Sebastião as a logistical alternative. Bulk sugar and coke are examples of new cargo,” explained CDSS CEO Ernesto Sampaio. The total number of such structures was brought to 14.

Mr. Sampaio also mentions significant improvements to the port, such as renovating the operational control center, paving storage yards and access roads, implementing a new automation system for the port’s access gate, and improving monitoring with a closed-circuit TV system. “We also took measures to ensure we meet security and customs requirements and implemented a new firefighting system,” he explained.

The Port of São Sebastião offers easy access via the Tamoios highway, connecting to major access points in the state of São Paulo, and is also near the railway network and São José dos Campos International Airport. The São Sebastião belt ring in the Tamoios road, in its final phase by the Government of São Paulo, provides an exclusive loop to the port, facilitating access and minimizing urban traffic interference.

In April, the port joined the Brazilian Alliance for Port Decarbonization, allowing the exchange of experiences and implementing actions to accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime and port sectors. As a first step in this commitment, the port began offering discounts on tariffs for sustainable, energy-efficient vessels that demonstrate low greenhouse gas emissions.” These initiatives align with our commitment to promoting sustainable development in São Paulo,” emphasizes the secretary.
