Above average: “If it weren’t for Rio, Brazil would collapse,” claims Port Director

The Port of Rio de Janeiro has grown more than the national average. This impressive performance was highlighted during the 3rd Porto Maravilha Solutions Forum, held at the Novotel Porto Atlântico in the Santo Cristo neighborhood on Wednesday (July 31).
In the forum’s first round of discussions, Luiz Henrique Carneiro, director of the Rio de Janeiro State Port Operators Union (Sindoperj), emphasized the region’s economic potential. He noted that the Port of Rio has established itself as a key supply point not only for the state but also for Minas Gerais and, more recently, Espírito Santo and Santa Catarina.
Logistical issues at the Port of Vitória and restructuring works at the ports of Navegantes and Itajaí have led to increased reliance on the Port of Rio to meet the demand diverted from these areas. “Rio is a hub for Brazil. If it weren’t for the Port of Rio, Brazil would collapse,” stated Carneiro, underscoring the port’s strategic importance.
Carneiro also stressed the need to attract more industries to the city and leverage the port as a driver of investments. According to a recent study, the return on these ventures could generate R$3 billion in taxes and create 30,000 jobs.
“The growth in demand showed that the port is capable of serving everyone. The Port of Rio grew 10.3%, more than double Brazil’s average. The growth rate for containers in the nation was 10.3%, but in Rio de Janeiro, it was 50.7%.”

Carneiro warned of infrastructure problems despite this notable growing business, especially on Avenida Brasil, a major access route to the port. “We need to have a plan for the next ten years to increase the traffic capacity of Avenida Brasil, both for cars and cargo, so that we don’t lag behind in supply,” he highlighted.
The 3rd Porto Maravilha Solutions Forum, produced by Entrepreneurship Club Brazil in partnership with the Rio Port Rio Business District, brings together municipal authorities, businesspeople, and the local community. The event aims to discuss and propose innovative solutions to the challenges of the port region, one of the fastest-growing areas in Rio de Janeiro.
