Brazilian poultry and pork processors are set to achieve record production and export volumes this year, according to revised projections by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), which represents companies such as JBS and BRF.

Chicken meat production in Brazil, the world’s largest exporter, is expected to grow by up to 1.8%, reaching 15.1 million metric tons.

The outlook is also positive for pork processors, who are projected to increase production and exports due to reduced pork output and exports from Europe.

Chicken meat exports are forecast to rise by up to 2.2%, reaching 5.25 million tons, despite a recent outbreak of Newcastle disease that triggered temporary trade bans.

Brazil’s national-level chicken export bans remain in place for countries including China, Mexico, and Argentina. Regional bans from Rio Grande do Sul, where the outbreak occurred, continue for sales to countries such as Russia, Saudi Arabia, Bolivia, Peru, and Chile. According to ABPA, Brazil is expected to export about 437,000 tons of chicken products per month this year, with trade restrictions potentially affecting up to 60,000 tons monthly. However, Brazil may redirect shipments to mitigate this impact, ABPA President Ricardo Santin said. The government announced last week that the Newcastle disease outbreak was over, but local meat processors are waiting for importers’ approval to resume trade. “All countries have received information about the end of the outbreak,” Santin said, adding that the industry expects trade restrictions to be lifted soon.

In the pork sector, where Brazil is the world’s fourth-largest supplier, exports could increase by up to 7.7% in 2024, reaching 1.325 million tons. The association noted that if China imposes anti-dumping measures against European pork processors, Brazil, the US, and Canada could be on the winning side.
