In a historic milestone for the Brazilian port sector, the Port of Itaqui, in partnership with Virtu GNL, presented a project of trucks powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This initiative represents a significant advance in the decarbonization of cargo transportation in Maranhão and solidifies the state as a pioneer in adopting clean technologies in the sector.

Gilberto Lins, president of the Port of Itaqui, attended the demonstration of the first vehicle and emphasized the initiative’s importance in meeting the port’s decarbonization goals. “The arrival of these trucks is a milestone for our port and the state of Maranhão, which becomes the first Brazilian state to have a logistics corridor powered by LNG. This initiative demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and to building a cleaner and more efficient future for the port sector,” said Lins.

José de Moura, founder of Virtu GNL, celebrated the inauguration of the green corridor powered by LNG, which starts at the Port of Itaqui. “This is an important achievement for the transportation sector and the environment. Our trucks offer more than 1,000 km of autonomy, guaranteeing greater operational efficiency and significantly reducing CO2 emissions by up to 20% compared to diesel vehicles,” he explained.

LNG trucks, which are more efficient and less polluting, will transport grains and fertilizers, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. “Besides the environmental benefits, using LNG trucks provides a better quality of life for truckers, with less noise and vibrations. Moreover, LNG is a safer and more reliable fuel,” he added.
