The Port of Pecém, located in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza, will add an eleventh mooring berth for ships by 2029, boosting its current capacity. This expansion aims to accommodate the growing cargo movement at the port, which is expected to double with the completion of the Transnordestina Railway.
Hugo Figueirêdo, president of the Pecém Industrial Port Complex (CIPP), shared this during the presentation of the port’s first-half results for 2024. Currently, the port operates with ten berths, and the new berth will be added at the Multipurpose Terminal (TMUT), which handles general cargo.
Investments eye logistics efficiency
Berth 5 will primarily support cargo arriving via the Transnordestina Railway, which is anticipated to be completed by 2027. This railway line, currently under construction in the Center-South of Ceará, is expected to increase cargo throughput at the port significantly.
Additionally, the port will expand berth 2, which was originally one of the first berths at Pecém. The renovation will extend the pier from 300 meters to 600 meters to facilitate the transportation of green hydrogen (H₂V) starting in 2029.
These expansions are part of a broader investment program approved by the CIPP board, with R$1 billion allocated over the next five years for improving piers, berths, and other infrastructure to support increased cargo from the Transnordestina and H₂V.
“This investment may even grow, depending on the updates we make annually, and it includes expanding Pier 2 to receive more cargo. We have a vision for the coming years, but we are talking not only about H₂V cargo but also about ammonia cargo,” Figueirêdo stated.
Fruit harvest expected to boost port operations
The port’s performance is expected to improve in the second half of 2024, driven by the fruit harvest season from July to December, which typically increases cargo volume. Last year, cargo movement from July to December exceeded 9.3 million tons, and this trend is likely to continue.
