The Secretariat of Agricultural Defense, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, has issued a regulation establishing phytosanitary requirements for importing melons from Chile. This regulation, issued in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) on August 5th, requires a phytosanitary certificate confirming the absence of pests for all melon shipments.

The shipments must be free of soil material and plant residues and packaged in new, first-use packaging. Upon arrival, they will undergo inspection at the point of entry, where the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock will collect samples for analysis in official or accredited laboratories.

If a quarantine pest or a pest with quarantine potential for Brazil is detected, the shipment will be either destroyed or rejected. The National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of Chile will be notified, and the NPPO of Brazil may suspend further shipments of fresh melon fruits until a Pest Risk Analysis is reviewed.

Shipments that do not meet these requirements will not be permitted entry.
