Nine individuals were discovered in a clandestine situation aboard a ship that docked at the Port of Santos, located on the coast of São Paulo. According to the Federal Police (PF), the group claims to be Nigerian and reportedly boarded the vessel in hiding at the Port of Lagos in Nigeria. The city administration has confirmed that they will be placed in isolation under PF watch for ten days in a hotel, following Health Surveillance protocols.
The ship, named ‘Jasmine,’ sails under the Liberian flag. The vessel docked at the Santos harbor on the evening of Tuesday, August 6, and was inspected the following day by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and the Special Maritime Police Unit (Nepom).
The city government stated that all members of the group appeared to be “asymptomatic and in good health.” Despite this, they emphasized the necessity of the ten-day isolation period to “monitor their health status.”
The PF further noted that the group’s nationality can only be confirmed after assessment by the Nigerian Embassy, which is scheduled to take place following the isolation period.
