Port of Pecém Welcomes the Largest Ship in Its History

The Port of Pecém observed a historic milestone last Friday (August 9th) by welcoming the largest ship ever to dock at the port. The MSC Jewel, measuring 366 meters in length, made its first call at the Ceará port terminal, surpassing the previous docking record by 33 meters.

“Thanks to the natural depth, infrastructure, and superstructure of the Port of Pecém, this MSC giant can fully maximize its capacity with the terminal’s 15.3-meter draft,” highlighted Hugo Figueirêdo, president of the Pecém Complex.

The MSC Jewel arrived from the Port of Caucedo in the Dominican Republic and departed Pecém for the Port of Suape. The container throughput associated with this docking was roughly 1,600 containers. André Magalhães, commercial director of the Pecém Complex, explained that the operation was an extra test call from Asia, and ships of this size mean less CO2 emissions per tonne transported.

“Besides advancing our green hydrogen projects, the Port of Pecém continues to grow in its throughput. This progress reflects the dedication of our teams. This docking, in particular, was a collaborative effort between port and maritime authorities and the pilotage service,” said André.

Performance Overview

The Port of Pecém saw an 11.3% increase in cargo throughput in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, with nearly 9 million tonnes moved between January and June. Container throughput also grew, reaching 235,186 TEUs, a 16% increase over the same period in 2023.
