Brazilian Trade Delegation Visits Uruguay for Strategic Talks on Port and Waterway Integration

On August 15, a high-profile delegation of Brazilian officials and business leaders was welcomed at the National Ports Administration (ANP) headquarters during a trade mission to Uruguay. The delegation was led by Dino Antunes Dias Batista, Brazil’s National Secretary of Waterways at the Ministry of Ports and Airports.

The group included Guillermo Valles, Uruguay’s ambassador to Brazil; Osmari de Castilho Ribas, administrative managing director of Portonave; Cristiano Klinger, president of Portos RS; Eduardo Nery, director-general of Brazil’s National Agency for Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ); Alber Vasconcelos, director of ANTAQ; Fabricio Guimaraes Juliao, CEO of Grupo Brasil Export; Leopoldo Figueiredo, director-general of Rede BE News; and Gilmara Temóteo, president of the Brazil Export Women’s Council.

ANP was represented at the meeting by Vice President Daniel Loureiro, alongside board member Alejandra Koch, general manager Susana Pierri, deputy general manager Horacio Lannes, head of the Commercialization Department Ana Rey, head of Operations and Services Gerardo Adippe, deputy head of the Commercialization Department Elisa Kuster, and chief of the Secretariat Division.

Daniel Loureiro welcomed the visitors, emphasizing Uruguay’s commitment to ensuring that its port infrastructure plays a complementary role for all neighboring countries. He highlighted ANP’s strong trade relations with the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Rio Grande do Sul, particularly in the transshipment of iron ore transported via the La Plata River from Corumbá. Loureiro also pointed to promising commercial and tourism opportunities that future interconnections with Rio Grande do Sul via the Merín Lagoon could bring.

Dino Antunes expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the port logistics involved in transporting iron ore from Corumbá. He noted that Brazil is eager to advance commercial integration with Uruguay, which is why the delegation includes more than 60 participants, including government officials, executives from business associations, and directors from various sectors. He also thanked Uruguay’s ambassador to Brazil, Guillermo Valles, for his support.

Fabricio Guimaraes Juliao, CEO of Grupo Brasil Export, echoed the appreciation for the Uruguayan ambassador’s leadership in this integration effort. He pointed out that in Brazil, there is an awareness of existing navigable channels that have not yet been fully developed into functional waterways, underscoring the need for a dedicated waterway policy, which is crucial for Brazil-Uruguay relations.
