Brazilian orange exports down 38% in season outset

Brazilian orange juice exports experienced a slow-burn start at the current 2024/25 harvest year, mirroring last year’s challenges. According to an analysis undertaken by the Applied Economics Advanced Studies Center (Cepea), based on Comex Stat data, nearly 53.4 thousand tonnes of orange juice (concentrate equivalent) were shipped in July alone, down an expressive 38% over the same month last year.

In the assessment of Cepea researchers, such a retraction does not come as a surprise in Brazil. Yields underwent a downsize pressure from smaller orchards in São Paulo and Minas Gerais, the country’s top orange suppliers. Besides, significant challenges can also be found in the domestic market, with rising orange import volumes reaching record figures this year.

From January to July, the country bought nearly 34.8 thousand tonnes, up 87% year-on-year, owing primarily to lower domestic supplies and high national prices.
