Rio Grande Port RIG10 Area Leased to Sagres in Public Bid

With a winning bid of R$ 7,752,459.25, Sagres Operações Portuárias emerged as the victor of Auction No. 05/2024, held on Wednesday (21) by the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ). The auction offered public areas at the Port of Rio Grande for lease. Originally scheduled for May, the event was postponed to August due to the severe flooding that hit Rio Grande do Sul at the time.

Representing the Port Authority at B3 headquarters in São Paulo were Cristiano Klinger, president of Portos RS; Bruno Almeida, technical advisor to the presidency; and Jacqueline Wendpap, chair of the Board of Directors. The RIG 10 area, located at the Port of Rio Grande, includes warehouses A6, C1, and C2, the LPG Center, and the annex of warehouse B3.

According to Flávia Galarraga, planning and development manager at Portos RS, the warehouses are designated for general cargo storage, while the LPG Center and the annex of warehouse B3 serve as operational support areas. The lease contract is valid for a maximum, non-renewable term of ten years.

Portos RS president Cristiano Klinger emphasized that the auction’s outcome highlights companies’ confidence in the Rio Grande port complex. “Receiving investments during this period of reconstruction is crucial and aligns with our strategic plan, which focuses on attracting investments, improving operations, and enhancing competitiveness,” Klinger remarked.

Leonardo Maurano, Director of Operations at Sagres Operações Portuárias, expressed gratitude to ANTAQ for postponing the auction, which was initially set for May, a time when Rio Grande do Sul faced one of the worst climate disasters in its history.

“Sagres has operated at the Port of Rio Grande for 22 years, where we maintain a solid and ongoing commitment. We believe in the port’s potential, which is why we consistently invest in it with our parent companies, Neltume Ports and Ultramar. Together, these companies reaffirm their confidence in Rio Grande do Sul and the Port of Rio Grande, ensuring future investments because we believe in the region’s growth and development,” Maurano assured.

Alex Sandro de Ávila, national secretary of ports and waterway transport, acknowledged the resilience of Rio Grande do Sul following the climate crisis. “All the auctions were successful, but witnessing an auction at the Port of Rio Grande after such a challenging and sorrowful period is undoubtedly extremely gratifying for us as the Ministry of Ports,” he emphasized.

In addition to the area at the Port of Rio Grande, lots at the ports of Recife and Rio de Janeiro were also granted to the private sector.
