Brazil greenlights creation of 11 new agricultural attachés abroad

Interministerial Resolution No. 18, which outlines the 11 new Brazilian diplomatic posts abroad that will feature agricultural attachés, was enacted on Friday, September 6th, by the Foreign Affairs Ministry MRE and the Agriculture Ministry Mapa.

The new posts will be established in the following countries: Algeria, Bangladesh, Chile, Costa Rica, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia (including the African Union, Djibouti, and South Sudan), Philippines (including the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau), Iran, Malaysia (including Brunei), Nigeria, and Turkey.

With this development, Brazil will have seven agricultural attachés in embassies across Africa, strengthening its presence in key economic partners and potential markets while expanding opportunities for the national farming sector.

“These new attaché posts reflect the recognition of agribusiness’s importance and its increasing role in Brazil’s international market presence. With these new positions, we will further enhance opportunities for the sector, generating jobs and income for Brazilians, especially as new markets open up,” said Agriculture and Livestock Minister Carlos Fávaro.

In July, the Federal Government signed a presidential decree authorizing the increase in agricultural attaché posts from 29 to 40. This represents the largest expansion since the position was created in 2008 under Decree No. 6,464, with all the new posts being implemented simultaneously.

Agricultural attachés serve as advisors to Brazilian diplomatic missions abroad. Their primary activities include identifying trade, investment, and cooperation opportunities for Brazil’s agribusiness. To do so, they engage with representatives from the public and private sectors, key opinion leaders in civil society, and academia.

Currently, agricultural attachés are stationed in the following locations: South Africa, Germany, Angola, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, Canada, China (two attachés), Colombia, South Korea, Egypt, United States, France (Brazil’s delegation to International Economic Organizations based in Paris), India, Indonesia, Italy (Brazil’s Permanent Delegation to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and International Organizations), Japan, Morocco, Mexico, Switzerland (Brazil’s delegation to the World Trade Organization and other economic organizations in Geneva), Peru, United Kingdom, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Belgium (Brazil’s Mission to the European Union in Brussels, two attachés), and Vietnam.
