“Beekeeping is a sustainable extractive activity that benefits fauna and flora and can generate various products, including honey, which is the most profitable. The United States and Canada are the main destinations in both Paraná and Brazil,” said CEO Luiz Fernando García.
After the pandemic, honey consumption in the United States has gradually resumed. On the other hand, the main supplier of the product in the world, China, faces problems of adulteration, which impacts the quality of the shipment. As it is a nutritional and medicinal product, adulterated honey is not suitable for consumption.
“Other countries are now supplying the North American demand, but Ukraine and Argentina are facing problems with the commercial and sanitary protocols for honey for export. A window has opened for Brazil to export the product and now the country is becoming a reference as a transporter of natural and quality honey,” explained Giovani Ferreira, member of the Board of Directors of Portos do Paraná.
Exports of natural honey produced in Paraná grew by 113% in the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2023. They amounted to 2,191 tonnes in 2024, compared to 1,026 tonnes from January to June last year. The growth in volume was also accompanied by an increase in revenue, with USD 5.5 million in the first six months of this year, 77% more than the USD 3.1 million in 2023.
Paraná was the fourth largest honey exporter in the country in the period from January to June. Piauí is in first place, with USD 14.4 million and 5,920 tonnes sold abroad, Minas Gerais in second place with USD 7.7 million and 2,918 tonnes sold abroad and Santa Catarina, in third place, sold USD 6.3 million and 2,522 tonnes.
