90 trips are estimated to be cancelled for the next four weeks

According to an analysis by  Drewry, cancelled voyages for the next four weeks will reach 90 blank sailings out of a total of 692 announced sailings. On average, 87% of ships are expected to start their voyages as planned.

The consultancy firm indicated that between week 38 (September 16-22) and week 42 (October 14-20), the main routes, namely the Transpacific, Transatlantic and Asia-North Europe and Mediterranean, accumulated a cancellation of 13% of the total departures.

During this period, 67% of blank voyages will be on eastbound Transpacific trade, 21% on Asia-North Europe-Mediterranean trade, and 12% on westbound Transatlantic trade.

Also, for the next five weeks, OCEAN Alliance announced 24 cancellations, followed by THE Alliance  and  2M  with 16 each. During the same period, 34 blank sailings will be implemented on services that do not belong to any alliance.

“In the latest developments, THE Alliance members HMM, ONE and Yang Ming will continue their partnership under the new Premier Alliance from February 2025 for five years. In the meantime, MSC will exchange slots with Premier Alliance on the Asia-Europe route and has also signed a three-year vessel sharing agreement with ZIM for transpacific trade with USEC and USGC,” Drewry said.

“Broadly speaking, Drewry’s first analysis indicates that from 2025 onwards, the industry will be dominated by two larger networks or alliances (MSC and Partners, together with ONE) compared to two smaller ones (Premier and Gemini). The larger alliances are expected to deploy approximately 30% more weekly circuits than their smaller counterparts,” he concluded.
