The Port of Açu made a significant step toward sustainability and innovation by signing a land reservation contract with HIF Global, a multinational e-fuels company developing projects to combat climate change. The agreement, formalized during a ceremony at ROG.e, Brazil’s leading energy fair, grants HIF access to a pre-licensed hydrogen and derivatives hub within the complex to establish an e-methanol production facility.

E-methanol, a clean and innovative fuel, will be produced using hydrogen generated from renewable energy sources combined with recycled CO2. This process not only contributes to the decarbonization of the energy matrix but also positions Brazil as a leader in sustainable fuel production, with applications ranging from transportation to power generation.

“Our agreement with HIF Global is a milestone for the Port of Açu and the region in this emerging industry. We are committed to promoting sustainable development and contributing to a cleaner, more energy-efficient future,” said Mauro Andrade, Executive Director of Business Development at Prumo. The e-methanol produced will be exportable via the Açu Liquid Terminal.

HIF’s project marks a major advance in Brazil’s energy transition, aiming to strengthen the port’s role as a national and global hub for green hydrogen. This initiative aligns with the federal government’s strategy to promote innovation and the use of renewable energy, which aligns with its carbon reduction and climate change mitigation goals.

HIF brings its international expertise and advanced technology to develop the project. “This is our first venture in Brazil. We have been operating the world’s first e-fuel facility for over a year, proving that our fuels are a real solution to combat climate change. We are excited about this collaboration and believe that the Port of Açu will be a key player in building a sustainable future,” highlighted Cesar Norton, President and CEO of HIF Global.

Located in Rio de Janeiro, the Port of Açu has already secured preliminary environmental licensing to develop a large-scale hydrogen and derivatives hub. The port complex is a major logistics and industrial center, now positioning itself as a key player in the renewable energy sector. The project is expected to attract new investments and boost the local economy.
