Brazilian exports of furniture and mattresses saw a 12.5% increase in July, following a 4.8% rise in volume and a 0.5% increase in revenue in the first half of 2024. The sector recorded $65.6 million in revenue for July, resulting in a cumulative growth of 1.3% from January to July 2024 compared to the same period last year.
These figures were reported by the Brazilian Furniture Industry Association (Abimóvel), based on a survey conducted by Iemi exclusively for the Brazilian Furniture Sectorial Project, developed in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil).
2024 Projections for Furniture and Mattress Exports
The positive performance has generated favorable expectations for 2024’s year-end results. Despite global economic instability, exchange rate fluctuations impacting production and logistics costs, and fierce international competition—particularly from China—Brazil’s furniture industry has been investing in adding value and boosting competitiveness through sustainable management, design integration, innovation, and quality.
With a strategic focus on diversifying its product mix and implementing green practices and clean technologies, the national furniture industry aims not only to tackle these challenges but also to expand its global footprint. Iemi projects a 1.1% growth in revenue and a 7.2% increase in export volume for the year.
“The dynamics of the global market are constantly evolving, and maintaining a leadership position requires ongoing adaptation and innovation,” said Irineu Munhoz, president of Abimóvel. “Our efforts to integrate quality design and sustainable management into each piece and process are setting new benchmarks in the furniture industry. As such, the Brazilian furniture industry is not just responding but also setting trends in the global market.”
An example of this commitment is the Design + Industry program, carried out through the Brazilian Furniture Project, which connects designers and manufacturers to create original pieces and collections that embody Brazilian identity—through material choice and diversity, production techniques, and socio-environmentally responsible practices, as well as the creative and productive capacity of Brazilian industry and design. In the sustainability realm, the Furniture Sector Sustainability Program (Simb) is entering its new phase—2024/2025—with several initiatives already underway.
