Cristiano Klinger, president of public port authority Portos RS, took part in the 2024 edition of the Port Performance Summit Brazil, an event dedicated to discussions on innovation, technology, automation, and the digitalization of ports and terminals. The event was held from October 2 to 3 at the AMCHAM Business Center in São Paulo. Klinger was one of the panelists and discussed the topic “Innovation and Technology in Supporting Decision-Making at Portos RS.”

During his presentation, Cristiano highlighted initiatives implemented by Portos RS to leverage technological solutions that drive the company’s management and strategic planning. The event, which had a technical focus, provided an opportunity to showcase the technologies being offered to the port sector—a point emphasized by Klinger in his remarks at the close of the event.

“We can include many examples, proposals, and applications in our discussions to improve operational efficiency. We also had the opportunity to present how Portos RS is investing and how technology aids our decision-making processes and the development of tools that allow us to overcome the calamity caused by the climate catastrophe in May.”

Among the initiatives mentioned was the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), a system under development that will enable real-time monitoring of the access channel to the Port of Rio Grande, enhancing operational safety. The work schedule anticipates completing the integration of equipment by March 2025, starting operator training in April 2025, and initiating system approval with the Brazilian Navy in June 2025.

Another innovation presented at the event was the partnership between Portos RS, the Wilson Sons Group, and Israeli startup DockTech. This technology provides real-time bathymetric data, 24/7, to map seabed variations. The system is installed on Wilson Sons’ tugboats and anticipates siltation events and draft restrictions, promoting greater safety, sustainability, and efficiency.

Cristiano also highlighted the automation of access gates at the public quay of the Port of Rio Grande as part of infrastructure investments aimed at complying with ISPS Code standards and customs requirements. This modernization will enable the provision of real-time information, enhancing operational efficiency, security, and traffic control.

The Port Performance Summit is one of the main events for the port sector in Brazil. It brings together leaders, experts, and port and terminal managers to discuss the latest technological innovations being applied to enhance the sector’s efficiency, productivity, safety, and sustainability. The event aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and strengthen Brazil’s port sector’s competitiveness.
