Port of Rio Grande Handles 81.7% of Ship Traffic in Rio Grande do Sul from January to September 2024

Between January and September 2024, the ports in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul received 2,667 vessels, with the Port of Rio Grande leading in numbers. Together, the three public ports in the state (Rio Grande, Pelotas, and Porto Alegre) saw 31.8 million tonnes of cargo.
Port of Rio Grande
The Port of Rio Grande was the primary contributor to the state’s vessel traffic, accounting for 2,181 vessels, or 81.78% of the total. Solid bulk cargo stood out, totaling 19.8 million tonnes. Among the products that experienced growth, wood chips saw an increase of 10.11%, reaching 812,400 tonnes. Pulp also performed well, with a 6.32% rise and a total of 2.8 million tonnes handled. Wheat and soybeans also saw increases, with rises of 6.19% and 2.57%, respectively.
Additionally, container throughput increased, totaling 580,735 TEUs, highlighting the significance of waterway transport. The main imports came from China, Argentina, and Russia, while exports were primarily directed to China and Vietnam.

Port of Pelotas
At the Port of Pelotas, cargo throughput reached 860,600 tonnes, with wood leading the charge at 736,028 tonnes. Clinker, used in cement production, ranked second with 116,200 tonnes. Soybeans also pitched in, reaching 8,300 tonnes.
Port of Porto Alegre
At the Port of Porto Alegre, throughput amounted to 513,900 tonnes, with a focus on inputs for fertilizer production, at some 225,300 tonnes. Wheat and barley were also significant, accounting for 182,084 tonnes and 57,742 tonnes, respectively. Other cargo, such as bovine tallow and salt, also contributed to the overall movement.
These figures, compiled by the Planning and Development Management of Portos RS, underline the importance of port operations to the state’s economy.
