Brazil exported 2.96 million 60-kilogram bags of instant coffee from January to September this year, marking a 6.8% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The figures were released on Friday (Oct 18) by the Brazilian Soluble Coffee Industry Association (Abics).
Revenue from these exports reached $657.4 million, representing a 23.2% rise year-on-year.

Domestically, instant coffee consumption stood at 823,000 bags in 2024, a 2.4% increase over the previous year.
According to Aguinaldo Lima, Director of Institutional Relations at Abics, the strong performance in instant coffee exports points to a potential revenue record by the end of this year. He attributes the growth to Brazilian producers’ investments in quality and technological innovations, which aim to meet socio-environmental and sustainability standards.
“Aligned with ESG criteria, Brazilian soluble coffee is well-positioned to expand its footprint in new, emerging, and traditional markets. If shipment delays do not hinder logistics in Brazil or geopolitical conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, we will likely see higher volumes than last year,” Lima said in a statement.
Lima expects the sector to achieve its highest export revenue for soluble coffee this year if this trend holds.
Top Buyers
Like arabica bean coffee, the United States remains the top destination for Brazilian soluble coffee despite a 12.9% drop in imports this year. By September, the U.S. had purchased 517,100 bags.
Russia surged to the second spot, with 194,500 bags imported from January to September—a significant 274.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Other coffee-producing nations, such as Indonesia and Mexico, also ranked among the top buyers. Indonesia imported 166,800 bags, up 18.7% year-on-year, securing third place. Mexico, the world’s second-largest soluble coffee producer, ranked eighth, increasing its purchases by 195% to 121,900 bags to offset production shortfalls caused by adverse weather conditions.
Lima also highlighted the strong performance in Vietnam, where imports surged by 188.1%.
“The strong results in volume and revenue in 2024, along with growth in other coffee-producing and instant coffee-making countries, highlight the quality and commitment to socio-environmental standards of Brazilian coffee, which continues to meet the demands of even the most demanding markets,” said Lima.
Domestic Consumption
Brazil consumed 823,000 bags of soluble coffee from January to September this year, a 2.4% increase compared to the 803,800 bags consumed during the same period in 2023.
“This growth was driven by a substantial 98.2% rise in freeze-dried coffee, which offset a modest 3.5% decline in spray-dried coffee, the latter accounting for 88% of the country’s total consumption. Meanwhile, imported soluble coffee, which makes up just 2% of the market, grew by 6.9% during this period,” explained Lima.
