Port of Santos Claims Historic Highs in Cargo Throughput

The Port of Santos, located in São Paulo state, saw 137.4 million tonnes of cargo from January to September 2024. According to the Santos Port Authority (APS), such cargo volume marks a 7.7% increase over the same period in 2023, when 127.6 million tonnes were processed.

APS also noted that this recent performance represents the highest cargo throughput for this timeframe in the port’s history.

The Port Authority highlighted an 11.2% increase in incoming cargo volumes, totaling 35.4 million tonnes over the period. Outbound cargo also saw robust growth, up 6.5% and reaching 102 million tonnes.

Cargo Throughput

APS reported that dry bulk cargo, one of the “primary cargo segments” at the port, totaled 71.6 million tonnes year-to-date, a 1.7% increase over 2023. “A standout was sugar exports, which rose by 33%,” added APS.

According to APS data, liquid bulk, which includes fuels and other chemicals, reached 14.5 million tonnes, up 2% from the same period in 2023.

Containerized cargo also experienced significant growth, totaling 44.4 million tonnes—a 21.6% jump. “Container operations in TEUs also hit record levels, reaching 4.0 million TEU, an increase of 15.8%,” APS reported.

Breakbulk cargo totaled 6.9 million tonnes, a 6.6% rise over the previous year, with pulp up 8.6%.

The chart below reveals the performance of container exports and imports at the Port of Santos between January 2022 and August 2024, measured in Twenty-Foot-Equivalent Units (TEUs). The information comes from DataLiner, a Datamar-developed product, and takes into consideration only long-haul shipments, excluding cabotage and transshipment operations.

Commercial Activity

APS further reported that the Port of Santos increased its share in Brazil’s trade flows, reaching 28.7% in September 2024, up from 28.3% in September 2023.

“About 27.9% of Brazil’s international trade through Santos involved China as the primary destination or origin. São Paulo state remained the largest contributor to trade through the port, accounting for 47.2%,” added the Port Authority.

Finally, APS indicated a rise in vessel calls, with 142 additional dockings: 4,040 in 2023 versus 4,182 in 2024 (through September).
