Port of Itaqui takes step toward implementing Decarbonization Plan

The Port of Itaqui is taking another significant step toward sustainability. In line with global targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the port recently completed a detailed analysis of its carbon footprint, encompassing both direct and indirect emissions tied to its operations. This assessment was presented in an online meeting with companies operating at Itaqui, including CLI, TEGRAM, COPI, COPABO, TRANSPETRO, GRANEL QUIMICA, ZIRAN, and VLi. The report establishes Itaqui as the first public port in Brazil to implement a comprehensive decarbonization program.
The study, conducted by the ValènciaPort Foundation, evaluated emissions according to the Scope 1, 2, and 3 criteria of the GHG Protocol, a widely recognized framework for emissions monitoring. According to the results, direct emissions (Scope 1) accounted for 0.3% of the port’s total emissions, while indirect emissions from electricity consumption (Scope 2) comprised 0.1%. The remaining 99.6% came from other indirect emissions (Scope 3), covering suppliers and third-party activities.
“Calculating our carbon footprint enables us to take more effective action in transitioning to more sustainable port operations,” said Isa Mary Mendonça, acting president of the Port of Itaqui. “This is an important step in identifying areas for improvement, enhancing our energy efficiency, and reinforcing our commitment to the environment and the community we serve.”

Next Steps Toward Decarbonization
With the carbon analysis complete, the Port of Itaqui is moving forward to implement its Decarbonization Plan. Bruno Mota, Itaqui’s Director of Planning and Development, highlighted the significance of this moment: “This study lays a solid foundation for us to set clear targets and collaborate with the private sector on CO₂ reduction. Sustainability is a shared commitment, and the Port of Itaqui is aligned with global goals to mitigate climate change.”
The decarbonization plan will include a range of initiatives developed in partnership with authorities and the private sector, aiming to transform the energy profile of port operations. Proposed strategies include implementing Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology, which allows docked ships to connect to the electrical grid, reducing fossil fuel use. The study indicates that liquid bulk vessels, for instance, have higher energy demands while berthed. Through OPS, the port can substantially reduce emissions for this vessel type.
“With the report completed, we’re already advancing the decarbonization plan,” explained Luane Lemos, the port’s environmental manager. “We’re holding biweekly meetings to establish priority actions and the necessary investments for each phase. These details will be outlined in the decarbonization plan, which is our next step.”
Environmental Impact and Leadership
Implementing this plan will position the Port of Itaqui as a leader among Brazilian public ports, strengthening its reputation as a proponent of advanced environmental practices. The objective is not only to reduce GHG emissions across the port chain but also to encourage other ports and companies to adopt ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices. For Itaqui, these sustainable initiatives could attract new business opportunities and strengthen partnerships with clients with similar environmental values.
