Super Terminais, a private terminal in the Manaus Industrial Hub, was recently recognized by the State Government of Amazonas for its role in Operation Itacoatiara, which ensures steady supply to the region’s industry. The honor was presented to Director Marcello di Gregorio during the 310th regular meeting of the Amazonas State Development Council (Codam) on Thursday (31).
Since September 12, Super Terminais has received 13 vessels at its floating pier in Itacoatiara, handling over 19,000 containers and transferring more than 417,000 tonnes of cargo. Operations achieved an impressive rate of around 30 moves per hour (MPH), aimed at ensuring the efficient flow of products from the Manaus Industrial Hub and maintaining local supply chains.
“Such impressive and economically impactful numbers are made possible by our skilled staff. We want to thank our team, whose dedication and commitment have been crucial to the project’s success. Every team member worked tirelessly to overcome challenges posed by the drought, demonstrating both resilience and commitment to Amazonas,” said Marcello di Gregorio, upon receiving the recognition.
Amazonas State Secretary of Economic Development, Science, Technology, and Innovation (Sedecti), Serafim Corrêa, highlighted the commitment of both the government and private sector in mitigating drought effects. “In April, the concept of temporary piers was introduced, and the Government of Amazonas, alongside regulatory agencies and industry partners, spared no effort to bring this solution to life. Today, we see the results of this bold initiative.”
The Operation
Operation Itacoatiara was devised by naval engineer Heitor Augusto de Souza Lima from PGE. The project team focused on creating a comprehensive solution to maintain the continuity of Amazonas industry operations.
The operation is carried out in an area specifically acquired for Super Terminais, featuring a 300,000-square-meter site on the left bank of the Amazon River with asphalt access via Itacoatiara Airport Road, just 1.4 km from the local public port.
The operational module is located 100 meters offshore, with a 34-meter draft capable of accommodating all types and sizes of vessels currently in use. The travel time between Itacoatiara and Manaus is optimized, taking approximately 18 hours downstream (covering 108 nautical miles, or about 200 km) and 12 hours upstream.
The initiative, primarily focused on container transshipment, operates seasonally from September to December or until river depths are restored. A floating pier, measuring 240 meters long and 24 meters wide, is equipped with three Konecranes ESP10 cranes, each with a 64-meter reach and powered by four 500 Kva generators, including a backup generator.
Operations run around the clock, seven days a week, across three shifts, with Super Terminais as the only port authorized for continuous operations. The main goal is to fully unload all vessel cargo and continue bargetraffic to the port of Manaus.
