Brazil and China sign agreement establishing new route between river ports in Amapá
Nov, 06, 2024On Monday (4th), a new direct waterborne route was established between Brazil and China aimed at transporting biofertilizers. The route connects the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau directly to the Port of Santana das Docas in Amapá, Brazil.
The memorandum of understanding was signed between the Santana Port Authority, located 17 kilometers from the capital, and the Zhuhai Economic and Technological Development Zone Administrative Commission, which is from China.
This agreement marks a significant step toward strengthening trade relations between Brazil and China and bolsters economic development in northern Brazil, enabling Chinese vessels to reach the region up to 14 days faster than traditional routes.
Brazil’s Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes, attended the signing ceremony alongside Chinese government officials.
“Today marked a milestone in China-Brazil relations. In a historic ceremony, we signed a cooperation agreement, formalizing our commitment to enhance trade between our countries. This deal paves the way for a new maritime route between the Port of Gaolan in China and the Port of Santana. This partnership promises to modernize infrastructure, shorten distances, and create a unique ecosystem of cooperation and sustainable development,” said the minister.
Representing China, Zhuhai Port Authority President Huang Jianping told Rede Amazônica that the agreement would boost both countries’ economies.
“We need to leverage this direct maritime route to increase trade, cultural exchanges, tourism, everything—to enhance all aspects of business,” Jianping said.
Members of the Zhuhai Economic and Technological Development Zone Administrative Commission, which is responsible for the Sino-Latin American Integrated Economic and Commercial Services Platform, were also present.
On top of biofertilizers, the aim is to expand exports to include agricultural raw materials from Amapá and other regions to China.
Santana’s mayor, Bala Rocha, highlighted that this initiative will create jobs and generate income for the municipality.
“China will export biofertilizers through the Port of Santana, which will be distributed across Brazil, especially to the Central-West region, while also supplying Amapá. In return, we’ll send soybean grains received at the Port of Santana to China. This partnership will create jobs, income, and opportunities,” said the mayor.
According to the Federal Government, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) has already conducted tests on the first batch of biofertilizers, with plans for technology transfer through the Federal Rural University of Amazonia (UFRA) to support local production.
UFRA has a cooperation agreement with Sino-Lac, a Chinese company leading the Sino-Latin American Integrated Economic and Commercial Services Platform.
