Super Terminais Initiative: Floating Pier in Itacoatiara Helps Amazonas Industry Set New Record

Super Terminais has played a vital role in setting a new record for the Amazonas industry with its Operação Itacoatiara. Since September 12, the floating pier has handled over 22,000 containers and more than 545,000 tons of cargo.

The cargo arrived at the port in Itacoatiara on 16 ships during a 24/7 operation, with an impressive average of 34 MPH (movements per hour). As evidenced by the import figures, this operation has significantly impacted the state’s economy.

According to the State Secretariat for Economic Development, Science, Technology, and Innovation (Sedecti), by October, Amazonas had reached US$13.7 billion in imports, surpassing the total of US$12.6 billion recorded in 2023. Projections suggest the state will reach US$16 billion by the end of the year, making 2024 a record year for imports in the last seven years.

A comparison between October 2023 and October 2024 shows a sharp increase in imports. In 2023, due to port restrictions caused by drought, the state recorded just US$604 million in imports. This year, with temporary ports operational, the figure for the same month reached US$1.378 billion.

Efficiency

The operation represents a R$15 million investment by Super Terminais. It includes the purchase of essential equipment such as moorings, ropes, and pumps, as well as bathymetric and soil studies. The investment also covers transportation, accommodation, and meal expenses for employees, office rentals, and other operational needs.

The operation ensures the continuity of activities at the Manaus Industrial Hub and injects resources directly into the local economy of Itacoatiara, promoting regional economic development. “This operation reflects our commitment to maintaining the supply of raw materials and the flow of local production, ensuring economic stability and job preservation in the region,” says Marcello Di Gregorio, the company’s director.

Heitor Augusto de Souza Lima, a Naval Engineer from the PGE company, manages the operation. It takes place on a 300,000-square-meter area acquired exclusively for Super Terminais’ use, located on the left bank of the Amazon River. The site is accessible via a paved road from Itacoatiara Airport, just 1.4 km from the local public port.

The operation module is positioned 100 meters from the shore, with a depth of 34 meters, allowing for the reception of all types and sizes of vessels currently in operation without difficulty. Navigation between Itacoatiara and Manaus is optimized, with an estimated 18-hour journey downstream (108 nautical miles or about 200 km) and 12 hours upstream.

The initiative focuses on container transshipment, with facilities available from September to December or until the river’s draft normalizes. The 240-meter-long, 24-meter-wide floating pier has three Konecranes ESP10 cranes, each with a 64-meter boom and four 500 kVA generators, including one backup generator.
